Adults

A full eye examination is a comprehensive assessment of your vision and overall eye health. For adults, regular eye exams are essential—not only for updating prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses, but also for detecting early signs of eye diseases and other health conditions that may not present symptoms right away.

During an adult eye exam, we check:

  • Visual acuity – how clearly you see at distance and near
  • Refraction – to determine your prescription for glasses or contact lenses
  • Eye muscle function – to ensure your eyes are working together properly
  • Pupil responses – to assess neurological function
  • Peripheral (side) vision – to screen for issues like glaucoma
  • Eye pressure (tonometry) – a key indicator for glaucoma
  • Front and back of the eye – using magnification to check the cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels
  • Overall eye health – to look for signs of conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more

We often recommend the use of dilating eye drops during the exam. These drops temporarily widen the pupils, allowing for a better view of the internal structures of the eye, particularly the retina and optic nerve. Dilation can help us detect serious conditions such as glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, macular degeneration, and signs of systemic diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Even if you feel your vision is fine, a routine eye exam can catch potential issues early—often before they affect your sight. That’s why regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining your overall health and wellness.

Children

A comprehensive eye exam for children is an important part of their overall health and development. Good vision is essential for learning, growth, and daily activities—and many vision issues can begin early in life without any obvious symptoms. Regular eye exams help ensure your child’s eyes are healthy and their vision is developing properly.

We recommend that children have their first eye exam at 6 months of age, and then annually after that to monitor their vision and eye health as they grow. Starting eye exams at a young age also helps children become comfortable with the process, making future visits easier and less intimidating.

During a child’s eye exam, we check:

  • Visual acuity – how clearly your child sees
  • Eye alignment and movement – to ensure both eyes are working together and tracking properly
  • Depth perception
  • Eye muscle function
  • Refraction – to determine if your child needs glasses
  • Overall eye health – checking for early signs of conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia), crossed eyes (strabismus), or other developmental concerns

In some cases, we may use eye drops to relax the focusing muscles of the eyes. This helps us accurately evaluate your child’s vision, especially when they are too young to communicate clearly or when more precise measurements are needed.

Eye Exams

There is no fee for children's eye exams, as they are fully covered by OHIP once every 12 months for individuals 19 years old and under.

Getting your child’s eyes checked regularly is a simple and effective way to support their vision, learning, and overall development—and starting early builds comfort and confidence with eye care from a young age.

Optical Coherence Tomography

An OCT scan (Optical Coherence Tomography) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to capture detailed cross-sectional images of the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This advanced technology allows us to examine the layers of the retina and detect early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often before any symptoms appear.

Please note that the OCT scan is not included in a routine eye exam. The cost is $65, and while it is not mandatory, it is highly recommended as part of a thorough eye health assessment.

It is especially recommended for individuals with a family history of macular degeneration or glaucoma, as well as for patients with diabetes, since early detection and regular monitoring can be critical for managing these conditions.

The OCT scan is not covered by OHIP, but it may be covered by private insurance depending on your plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for more information about your specific coverage.

Vision Exams

LASIK co-management

Laser vision correction may be a suitable option for certain individuals seeking to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. If you are interested in this procedure, it can be discussed during your routine eye exam. At that time, we can also perform a preliminary screening to assess whether you may be a good candidate.

The final decision regarding eligibility and treatment rests with the laser surgery center you choose, and we are pleased to provide referrals to trusted providers.

Post-surgical care involves a series of follow-up visits to monitor your recovery and ensure optimal results. We work in close collaboration with the surgeon and are able to manage some or all of your follow-up appointments as part of your ongoing care.
